Quando o último disco do Guns N''Roses foi lançado, não havia iPod nem download digital. Não existia o programa "American Idol", muito menos blogs sobre música ou o MySpace. Os álbuns duplos Use Your Illusion I e II, lançados simultaneamente em 1991, alcançaram imediatamente o topo das paradas. Na época, o Guns N''Roses era uma das bandas mais quentes do rock''n''roll, lotando estádios e colecionando músicas de sucesso. Os fãs mal podiam esperar por novo material da banda. Mas a espera foi longa, e agora, 17 anos depois de "Use Your Illusion", o Guns finalmente lança um novo CD.
Com uma formação completamente diferente, exceto pelo vocalista Axl Rose, e uma série de atrasos e tropeços, o já mítico "Chinese Democracy" chega às lojas no domingo. A longa demora para o lançamento criou grandes expectativas em torno do álbum, mas também abalou a credibilidade da banda. "Será que toda a expectativa será maior que o disco em si?", questiona Bob Brunner, editor sênior da revista Entertainment Weekly.
Axl Rose começou a trabalhar em "Chinese Democracy" em 1994. Dois anos depois o guitarrista Slash deixou a banda, sendo acompanhado em seguida pelo baterista Matt Sorum e pelo baixista Duff McKagan. Anos depois, os ex-integrantes formaram a banda de hard-rock Velvet Revolver e conseguiram, se não o sucesso dos tempos de Guns N''Roses, manter a credibilidade e a integridade artística.
A conceituada revista Rolling Stone chegou a prever o lançamento de "Chinese Democracy" para 2000. Mas a estréia ainda estaria distante. Depois de trocar integrantes do grupo, Axl fez nesse mesmo ano uma apresentação após vários anos longe dos palcos. Em 2001, a banda esteve no Brasil, onde participou do festival Rock in Rio 3. Em 2002, com visual diferente e trancinhas, Axl e sua banda apresentaram novas músicas durante o MTV Video Music Awards.
''Obrigação''
"O mais surpreendente é que poucas pessoas comentaram sobre as músicas. O maior foco estava no visual de Axl e no fato de ele ter aparecido. Não tinha nada a ver as novas canções", lembra Brunner. "Foi quando começou a parecer que as coisas não estavam indo na direção certa." Em meio aos adiamentos para o lançamento de "Chinese Democracy", a gravadora Geffen Records lançou uma coletânea com os maiores sucessos do Guns e declarou que era obrigação da banda financiar e completar o disco, que teve custos elevados.
Depois de fracassada a expectativa de lançamento em 2006, Axl chegou a marcar o lançamento para 6 de março de 2007. Ainda em 2006, quatro faixas do álbum vazaram na internet, e no ano seguinte outras também caíram na rede. Depois de tantos anos de espera e conseqüente perda de credibilidade, a fabricante Dr. Pepper anunciou que daria um refrigerante para cada americano caso o "Chinese Democracy" fosse lançado antes do fim de 200. A empresa diz que vai cumprir a promessa.
No outono norte-americano deste ano (primavera no Brasil), duas faixas do disco foram lançadas oficialmente, uma em um videogame e outra em um filme. No dia 20/11, as 14 músicas do CD foram publicadas no MySpace e o disco chegou às lojas no dia 23 de novembro. "Esta é a chance de Axl", afirmou Brunner. "Se o álbum não tiver uma boa receptividade, não acredito que ninguém, daqui a 15 anos, ficará na expectativa pelo lançamento do álbum seguinte a "Chinese Democracy".

Axl, além de um grande músico, tem um enorme carisma. Tanto que durante todos esses anos sempre se falou nele. Acho que seu tempo de reclusão foi importante para seu amadurecimento pessoal e o afastamento de brigas e drogas. Atualmente, o que se percebe é uma pessoa com o estrelismo diminuido ao extremo. Meu caro Jonas, os últimos discos do Guns n' Roses realmente foram o Use Your Illusion I e Use Your Illusion II. O disco "The Spaghetti Incident?", lançado em 1993, não tinha músicas de autoria do Guns n' Roses, as músicas eram covers. Um novo recomeço
O que temos que leva em conta aqui é que esse novo trabalho foi feito com uma outra banda com outris musicos e que diga-c de pasagem que não teve nada aos ex entegrantes do Guns.
